—1N. J3. GARRISON ARTILLERY. 7Hugh Johnston, he put <strong>the</strong> first steamboat on <strong>the</strong> St. Johnriver. It was called <strong>the</strong> General Smy<strong>the</strong>, and made <strong>the</strong> firsttrip to Fredericton on May loth, 1816. The General Smy<strong>the</strong>was followed by <strong>the</strong> St. George, John Ward and Fredericton.Naturally he took much interest in military matters and untilhis resignation in 18 16 was for many years in <strong>the</strong> command<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> militia <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city and county <strong>of</strong> Saint John. In 1809,i8i6 and 18 19 he represented <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Saint John in <strong>the</strong>House <strong>of</strong> Assembly. His name, for many years, stood first in<strong>the</strong> commission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peace for <strong>the</strong> city and county, until on 5thNovember, 1846, he died at his residence, corner <strong>of</strong> King andGermain streets, in <strong>the</strong> 94th year <strong>of</strong> his age. The following isan extract from <strong>the</strong> obituary notice which appeared in <strong>the</strong> St.John " Courier " upon his demise:"Thus full <strong>of</strong> years and honors has departed one who hasled an unblemished life, and who carries with him to <strong>the</strong>grave <strong>the</strong> highest esteem and most pr<strong>of</strong>ound respect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>community to whom his noble and venerable appearance, hisstrict integrity and amiable disposition have long been familiar."So with <strong>the</strong> life story <strong>of</strong> a good and noble man whose youhwas brilliant with courage and whose multitude <strong>of</strong> years taughtwisdom, closes <strong>the</strong> first half century <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corps <strong>of</strong> whichhe was a founder and which venerates his memory today asthat <strong>of</strong> a hero and a patriarch.
