J.Stackhouse, resigned, and thus began <strong>the</strong> militiacareer <strong>of</strong> an accurate and enthusiastic <strong>of</strong>ficer.During <strong>the</strong> year <strong>the</strong> efforts <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant Deacon to obtainfor <strong>the</strong> corps a set <strong>of</strong> colors had been very successful, and inDecember <strong>the</strong> silken trophies arrived from England. Theirpresentation to <strong>the</strong> regiment was an interesting and imposingevent. The following is an account taken from a newspaper<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time :The Colors recently procured in England for <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong><strong>Regiment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong> were presented at <strong>the</strong> Institute lastevening (i8th December). The hall was filled to overflowingshortly after seven o'clock, and hundreds <strong>of</strong> people retired unableto procure admittance. Large numbers <strong>of</strong> those presentremained standing^ during <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evening, it beingimpossible to obtain seats for all who gained admittance.The volunteers in and about <strong>the</strong> city attended in large forceand made quite an interesting appearance. About eight o'clockCaptain Rankine's company, carrying <strong>the</strong> colors furled, entered<strong>the</strong> hall and marched upon <strong>the</strong> platform, <strong>the</strong> City Band playing"British Grenadiers." The colors were <strong>the</strong>n unfurled, <strong>the</strong>band playing " Rule Brittania."Lieutenant-Colonel Thurgar informed <strong>the</strong> audience that <strong>the</strong>colors were now to be presented in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladies <strong>of</strong>St. John, and he called upon Rev. Dr. Gray to consecrate<strong>the</strong>m.The address <strong>of</strong> presentation was delivered, extempore, byLieutenant-Colonel Gray. He spoke (an unusual thing forhim) so low as to be heard quite indistinctly in <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house. Addressing himself to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers and men<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artillery he said that he was honored by <strong>the</strong> command<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City and County to represent <strong>the</strong>m on thisoccasion. What, he asked, is <strong>the</strong> purpose that has broughtus toge<strong>the</strong>r ? This banner (pointing to <strong>the</strong> dark blue banner)beautiful as it is, is but <strong>the</strong> product <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> worm ; <strong>the</strong> workupon it is that <strong>of</strong> frail, though, perhaps, young and beautifulhands.
