On arriving at <strong>the</strong> St. John hotel His Excellency wasreceived by a guard <strong>of</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 36th <strong>Regiment</strong>, andano<strong>the</strong>r salute was fired by Captain Robertson's <strong>Artillery</strong>company which was stationed on <strong>the</strong> King square.The birth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales was celebrated on <strong>the</strong>8th December by <strong>the</strong> Royal troops firing a salute, but <strong>the</strong>newspapers do not state whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re was any demonstrationby <strong>the</strong> militia.On <strong>the</strong> 17 th August <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next year a bazaar and exhibitionwas held in <strong>the</strong> Mechanics' Institute under <strong>the</strong> patronage <strong>of</strong>Lady Colebrooke. Upon <strong>the</strong> opening an address was readby Vice-President Jack and Sir William read an answer onbehalf <strong>of</strong> Lady Colebrooke. As Her Ladyship entered <strong>the</strong>hall a royal salute was fired by a detachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artilleryunder Major Nicholson, and <strong>the</strong> National An<strong>the</strong>m was playedby <strong>the</strong> band <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>Regiment</strong>. It is interesting to notethat among <strong>the</strong> articles exhibited were working models <strong>of</strong> asteam engine projected by Lewis W. Durant and manufacturedby him and James G. Melick. The exhibition was onquite a large scale for those days. It aspired to <strong>the</strong> dignity<strong>of</strong> a picture gallery in which <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> honor was assignedto <strong>the</strong> portrait <strong>of</strong> Major Ward.In September <strong>of</strong> this year Major Lock's company <strong>of</strong> Royal<strong>Artillery</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n at St. John, was relieved by a detachment underCaptain Tuite. On <strong>the</strong> 12th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> month <strong>the</strong> St. Johndivision <strong>of</strong> militia artillery assembled for drill.The next year's militia orders show Charles J.Melick tohave succeeded to <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old company <strong>of</strong> 1793,which was about to celebrate its jubilee. The orders alsonote that in August <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong> <strong>Regiment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong>subscribed <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> ^9 toward <strong>the</strong> rebuilding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
