He despatched ninety men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 36th regiment<strong>the</strong>n at Fredericton, under Colonel Maxwell, to Woodstock.On 13th February a draft was ordered from <strong>the</strong> istand 2nd battalions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>.Carleton county mihtia. A requestfor troops was sent to Sir John Colborne, <strong>the</strong> commander inUpper Canada. The militia <strong>of</strong> St. John volunteered ; <strong>the</strong> firstto come forward being fifty men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Highland companyunder Captain, afterwards <strong>the</strong> Hon. John Robertson. A draftwas made on <strong>the</strong> militia in that city, one company <strong>of</strong> seventyfivemen being taken from <strong>the</strong> ist battalion and ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>equal strength from <strong>the</strong> rifle battalion. These men did garrisonduty during <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regulars from <strong>the</strong> city. Theregiment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong> volunteered its services which were acceptedby <strong>the</strong> following order :MilitiaGeneral OrderHeadquarters, Fredericton,19th March, 1839.—His Excellency <strong>the</strong> Lieutenant Governor and Commanderinchief, having accepted <strong>the</strong> voluntary <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong> <strong>Regiment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong>, has been pleased toorder into actual service one <strong>of</strong>ficer, two non-commissioned<strong>of</strong>ficers and nine gunners per company (toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> adjutant)at each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following stations, viz. : Fredericton,Woodstock, Saint John and Saint Andrews.Lieutenant-Colonel Hayne will be pleased to take immediatesteps for carrying this arrangement into effect.By command,(Signed)George Shore,Adjutant.
