:l8oHISTORICAL RECORDS OF THENo. 2 battery in this year decided to build a drill shed for<strong>the</strong>mselves and started out to raise <strong>the</strong> funds by a series <strong>of</strong>concerts. One was held in <strong>the</strong> Carleton City Hall on November29th at which a good programme was given. Among <strong>the</strong>principal features was <strong>the</strong> revival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old 'Chesapeake andShannon,' which has since been <strong>the</strong> marching song <strong>of</strong> thatbattery.One <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Colonel Armstrong's Christmas boxesthis year was an appointment as A. D. C. to His Excellency<strong>the</strong> Governor-General.In February, 1889, Captain Seely was promoted to <strong>the</strong>majority, and in <strong>the</strong> following May Captain Crawford <strong>of</strong> No.3 battery was transferred to No. i ; Lieutenant McLeod beingpromoted to <strong>the</strong> captaincy <strong>of</strong> No. 3. Major Seely was presentedwith a handsome gold headed cane by his battery uponhis promotion.The winter carnival, held on 27 th February, was participatedin by <strong>the</strong> artillery as <strong>the</strong> following newspaper extract will show"To <strong>the</strong>' artillery belongs <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> a fine historic representation,and to Portland battery credit must be given for atableau expressive <strong>of</strong> loyalty. It is fresh in <strong>the</strong>recollection <strong>of</strong> many persons how <strong>the</strong> troops were hurried outto Canada and up through our province to Quebec. Thetransport arrangements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> home authorities were well imitatedyesterday by <strong>the</strong> artillery, and effective scenes were presentedby <strong>the</strong> sledges where artillerymen wrapped in <strong>the</strong>ir greatcoats were seated in <strong>the</strong> rough and ready conveyances. Following<strong>the</strong> teams with <strong>the</strong> men were o<strong>the</strong>r teams laden with fieldpieces, wheels and limbers. The teams had <strong>the</strong> mottoes, ' TrentAffair,' Riviere du Loup 'via Nerepis,' 'via Fredericton,' 'St.
