A.,1886.The corps was not destined to have <strong>the</strong> new major long in<strong>the</strong> saddle, though while life lasts he will always be with <strong>the</strong>min spirit. In February <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next year he was appointed districtstorekeeper for <strong>the</strong> Province <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong>, and hispleasant companionship with <strong>the</strong> corps came to an end so faras <strong>the</strong> militia lists can testify.At <strong>the</strong> annual meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers on 14th March, 1887,a vote <strong>of</strong> thanks was passed to Blair Botsford, Esq., <strong>of</strong>Dorchester, N. B., for <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> a valuable challenge cupwhich has since been competed for among <strong>the</strong> batteries by<strong>the</strong> non-commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficers' answers to questions. In case<strong>of</strong> a tie it is decided by <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers' answers to <strong>the</strong>ir questions.The <strong>of</strong>ficers also passed <strong>the</strong> following resolution upon <strong>the</strong> death<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel Peters which occurredon 5th February, 1887:Whereas, The late Lieutenant-Colonel Martin HunterPeters, lately in command <strong>of</strong> this corps, has departed thislife, having served with <strong>the</strong> militia volunteers <strong>of</strong> this provincefor a period <strong>of</strong> over forty years ; <strong>the</strong>reforeResolved, That <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong> BrigadeGarrison <strong>Artillery</strong> do hereby place on record <strong>the</strong>ir feelings <strong>of</strong>respect and esteem for <strong>the</strong> late Lieutenant-Colonel Peters.Always willing to devote his time, attention and ability to <strong>the</strong>service <strong>of</strong> his country, and in aid <strong>of</strong> his fellow men, he atlast lost his life in <strong>the</strong> commendable effort <strong>of</strong> saving his neighbors'property from destruction by fire ; and fur<strong>the</strong>r
