GARRISON ARTILLERY. 205When strangers meet as once met only friends,And each gives kindly greeting to his fellowAnd Peace, with her twin sister, Learning tendsFor ancient hate <strong>of</strong> race to make amends,Beneath <strong>the</strong> old Martello.The Imperial barracks used to be on <strong>the</strong> ground at LowerCove now occupied by <strong>the</strong> drill shed and as a parade ground.They were erected about 1819-20, and were destroyed in <strong>the</strong>fire .<strong>of</strong> 1877 with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> two stone buildings on Sidneystreet which still remain.About 1812-13 ^ wooden block house was erected on Kingstreet, east, at <strong>the</strong> intersection <strong>of</strong> Wentworth street. Traverseswere also cut in <strong>the</strong> solid rock for a two gun battery, butwhen <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> King street was reduced some years ago alltrace disappeared <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eminence on which <strong>the</strong> block houseand battery stood.Besides <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>re were four batteries on <strong>the</strong> line <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>shore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> harbor and Courtenay Bay, called <strong>the</strong> 'Graveyard battery,''Sou<strong>the</strong>rn battery,' 'Blockhouse battery,' and <strong>the</strong> 'Easternbattery,' or 'Fort Johnston' on Pitt street, fronting on CourtenayBay. It is difficult at <strong>the</strong> present time to get any au<strong>the</strong>nticaccount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se batteries. General opinionplaces <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> erection about <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>war <strong>of</strong> 181 2, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battery at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong>Sidney street, called <strong>the</strong> 'Sou<strong>the</strong>rn battery.' In <strong>the</strong> newspaperaccount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> Prince Edward, Duke <strong>of</strong> "Kent,in 1794, quoted in <strong>the</strong> second chapter, it is stated that a royalsalute was fired from Dorchester ' battery.' This name has alwaysbeen applied to <strong>the</strong> Barrack batteries and it is probable that<strong>the</strong> 'Sou<strong>the</strong>rn battery' is <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fortifications on <strong>the</strong>
