Bliss, who, on lothSeptember, 1827, had been appointed and now received amajority. There is also a reference in militia <strong>records</strong> to Capt.Thomas Jones, artillery, 3rd York battalion. He was appointedon 3rd July, 1829, but <strong>of</strong> him <strong>the</strong>re is no fur<strong>the</strong>r trace.John Saunders Shore was gazetted lieutenant on 25thAugust, 1834, and Donald McLeod on 2nd September in <strong>the</strong>same year. The former succeeded to a captaincy on <strong>the</strong> death<strong>of</strong> Major. Bliss, i8th June, 1836, and George M. Odell wasappointed lieutenant on <strong>the</strong> same day. These <strong>of</strong>ficers cameinto <strong>the</strong> regimental formation in 1838.In 1833 ano<strong>the</strong>r St. John company was formed under CaptainThomas L. Nicholson, with John Pollok, ChartersSimonds and William Ross as lieutenants. This was <strong>the</strong>Portland company. Nicholson was an auctioneer and commissionmerchant on <strong>the</strong> North wharf; Pollok was in RobertRankin & Co., an old time firm <strong>of</strong> great repute ; Simondswas in that employ and Ross was a steamboat engineer.Robert Reed, Esq., who died a few years ago, was afterwards,an <strong>of</strong>ficer in this company, and as a private wa* largely instrumentalin its organization. He was <strong>the</strong>n a clerk with JamesWhitney, <strong>the</strong> pioneer steamboat owner <strong>of</strong> St. John. Shortlybefore his death he mentioned James Anderson and JohnHopkins, <strong>of</strong> St. John, as <strong>the</strong> only survivors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> originalcompany. In <strong>the</strong> same year Sergeant Robert Robertson andCharles J.Melick were appointed second lieutenants in <strong>the</strong>CoLViLLE company.St. John has always boasted <strong>of</strong> a ' Kid Glove ' battery.
