Mr. Peters was in possession<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ist Battalion St. John Light Infantry, anddesired to have <strong>the</strong>m placed in St. Paul's church. The eventcannot be better described than by <strong>the</strong> following extract from<strong>the</strong> * Daily Sun ' newspaper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next day:"At sharp half-past two yesterday when <strong>the</strong> battalion assembledin <strong>the</strong> drill shed <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r—^a littlehot and dusty, perhaps, but tempered now and again with acool breeze. The battalion fell in with Lieutenant-ColonelArmstrong in command, and Major Jones appeared for <strong>the</strong>first time in his new rank. In <strong>the</strong> absence, through illness,<strong>of</strong> Captain Crawford, Captain White took charge <strong>of</strong> No. icompany with Lieutenant B. R. Armstrong as subaltern. No. 2company (Carleton) was under command <strong>of</strong> Captain Baxter,with Lieutenants Tilley and Scovil ; No. 3, under CaptainGordon, with Lieutenant Foster ; and No. 4, under CaptainArmstrong, with Lieutenants Jones and Skinner. On <strong>the</strong>staff were Quartermaster Gordon, Surgeon Andrews and anumber <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> retired <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Light Infantry whosecolors were to be presented, and also retired <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>artillery. Among <strong>the</strong>m were : A. A. Stockton, M. P. P., CaptainCharles Campbell, Lieutenant W. Roxborough, CaptainJ.Alfred Ring, Lieutenant McKinney and Captain A. W.LovETT. Major Markham, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 8th Cavalry, and Major A.J.Armstrong, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> district staff, and Majors Sturdee,Hartt and Magee, with Surgeon Walker, Rev. Fr. Davenport,chaplain, and Lieutenant Macmichael, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 62nd, alsoattended on <strong>the</strong> staff.On <strong>the</strong> Barrack square <strong>the</strong> battalion was drawn up in linein two ranks, and at 3 o'clock <strong>the</strong> color party, from No. 3company, appeared with <strong>the</strong> colors guarded by fixed bayonets.They were received with a general salute and <strong>the</strong> colors takenover by Lieutenants Tilley and Foster, <strong>the</strong> senior subalterns onparade. The band played Auld Lang Syne and <strong>the</strong> NationalAn<strong>the</strong>m.The battalion <strong>the</strong>n marched in fours from <strong>the</strong> left <strong>of</strong> companies.
