Engagements for <strong>the</strong> services <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> band haveto be made with a due regard to <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corpsand with consideration for <strong>the</strong> fact that almost every engagementtakes at least a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men from <strong>the</strong>ir dailyvocations. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se things have been well and carefullydone and <strong>the</strong> corps appreciates <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> success isdue to <strong>the</strong> enthusiasm and untiring energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> band committee. In 1885 <strong>the</strong>re existed what was knownas <strong>the</strong> City Brass Band. They were unpretentious musiciansbut anxious for improvement, and for a chance to show what<strong>the</strong>y could do under favorable conditions. Negotiations werecarried on for some time which resulted in <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> band in <strong>the</strong> uniform <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corps, on October ist, 1885.Three days later <strong>the</strong> band accompanied <strong>the</strong> brigade to divineservice. The leader was Michael Madigan, a veteran <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Crimean war. The men:enrolled wereJames Holman, Albert Burgess,Charles H. Smith, John M. Jenkins,Wm. Duncan, Wm. Mitchell,Thos. Duncan, Samuel Patterson,J. A. LiPSETT, Albert Watters,Joseph Mat<strong>the</strong>ws, A. J.Charlton,and soon afterwards John Tenfold, Fred. Meneley andFred. W. Amland were added to <strong>the</strong> roll.At <strong>the</strong> inspection <strong>of</strong> 1885 <strong>the</strong> corps had music, not, perhaps,<strong>of</strong> a very ambitious character, but <strong>the</strong> men who madeit were bound that it should be improved. It was <strong>the</strong>n adifficult matter for <strong>the</strong> infant band to obtain engagements, andMr. A. B. CoLWELL, afterwards an enthusiastic member whocontributed an excellent newspaper sketch <strong>of</strong> its history, isauthority for <strong>the</strong> statement that members <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r bands would
