N. B. GARRISON ARTILLERY. 167The opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dominion Exhibition on October istwas signaHzed by a salute from No. lo battery followed byH. M. S. Garnet^ <strong>the</strong>n in harbor, running up <strong>the</strong> Americanflag and firing a royal salute. This courtesy was an acknowledgment<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American salute to <strong>the</strong> British flag at Yorktown.The U. S. S. Alliance^ Commander Reed, immediatelyresponded with a salute, and thus, in <strong>the</strong> harbor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loyalistswas evidenced a reconciliation, effected by <strong>the</strong> community<strong>of</strong> ancestry and <strong>the</strong> healing hand <strong>of</strong> time.Inspection was held on 9th October by Lieutenant-ColonelCotton, assistant inspector <strong>of</strong> artillery, who, in his report advertedto <strong>the</strong> intended retirement <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Colonel Foster,and congratulated him on <strong>the</strong> state in which he would hand over<strong>the</strong> brigade. On 12th December, 1883, <strong>the</strong> formal announcementwas made that Lieutenant-Colonel Stephen Kent Foster waspermitted to retire retaining rank, and thus ended <strong>the</strong> honorableservice <strong>of</strong> a gentleman whose first artillery commissionbears <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 25th April, 1834, a continuous service<strong>of</strong> nearly half a century as an <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> his well loved corps,and much more than that as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> militia. Consequentupon his retirement <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brigade devolvedupon Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel M. H. Peters, who,being over <strong>the</strong> prescribed age could not be promoted to <strong>the</strong>regularcommand.In 1884 Staff-Sergeant Walling was sent from Quebecto instruct a team for <strong>the</strong> competition which was held at <strong>the</strong>latter place in September and in which <strong>the</strong> brigade had <strong>the</strong>honor <strong>of</strong> taking second place in <strong>the</strong> "B" or "go-as-youplease" shift. Before leaving St. John Sergeant Walling wasgiven a supper by <strong>the</strong> non-commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brigade.At <strong>the</strong> annual inspection Major-General Middleton was
