N. 1^ GARRISON ARTILLKRY. 7"Ordered, that <strong>the</strong> Clark do prepare an advertisement to**send to <strong>the</strong> publick papers <strong>of</strong>fering in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cor-"poration 20 dollars reward to any person who shall discover"<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fender or <strong>of</strong>fenders to be paid on conviction."No fur<strong>the</strong>r reports appear to have been received during <strong>the</strong>winter and <strong>the</strong>re was no fur<strong>the</strong>r reference to <strong>the</strong> unfortunatesentinels. The alarm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French revolution, however, had,among o<strong>the</strong>r things, caused <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> a company <strong>of</strong>artillery which has unbroken historical continuity with <strong>the</strong> organization<strong>of</strong> today. It will be noticed that <strong>the</strong> term 'company'is used in referring to <strong>the</strong> artillery <strong>of</strong> that time. It was <strong>the</strong>nand until about 1862 continued to be <strong>the</strong> correct designation<strong>of</strong> artillery. It is a fact, worthy <strong>of</strong> note, that Captain Colville'scompany was organized only seventy-seven years later than<strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> that splendid regiment which shares in everyvictory <strong>of</strong> British arms and proudly writes ^Ubique' on its shield.The Royal artillery having been organized with two companiesclaim regimental history from 17 16, while <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong>kinsman must be content with <strong>the</strong> record <strong>of</strong> a single companyuntil 1833. At first our company formed a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SaintJohn County militia and was accorded <strong>the</strong> honor due to artillery<strong>of</strong> occupying <strong>the</strong> right flank at inspections and reviews.When <strong>the</strong> annual parade states were made up <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong>ficersand non-commissioned . <strong>of</strong>ficers were always included in <strong>the</strong>state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artillery. Ano<strong>the</strong>r and a very special distinctionwas accorded to this company—that <strong>of</strong> wearing gold facingsinstead <strong>of</strong> those at that time usually worn by colonial corps.The personnel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first muster-roll is an interesting studyto a resident <strong>of</strong> St. John. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> names are still borneby <strong>the</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old artillerymen while o<strong>the</strong>rs havecompletely died out.
