GARRISON ARTILLERY. 21- Exclusive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above sum £iio was paid by differentmembers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company, under <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> "City and CountyoC Saint John " which makes <strong>the</strong> total amount that <strong>the</strong> companysubscribed ^^^208 5 10.The news <strong>of</strong> Nelson's victory at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nile,fought August I St, 1798, reached Saint John by <strong>the</strong> ship William,Capt. Hunter, about <strong>the</strong> 23d November following. It wasreceived with universal exultation. The Saint John Gazette<strong>records</strong> :— 'as soon as <strong>the</strong> agreeable intelligence reached this'loyal city <strong>the</strong> forts and shipping in <strong>the</strong> harbour were decorated'with <strong>the</strong>ir flags flying, and universal joy diffused itself through'every order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people. At 12 o'clock a salute <strong>of</strong> 21 guns'was fired by <strong>the</strong> Royal <strong>Artillery</strong>, followed by a discharge <strong>of</strong>'three volleys from <strong>the</strong> troops in garrison, which was returned'by <strong>the</strong> same number <strong>of</strong> guns from <strong>the</strong> City <strong>Artillery</strong> and'ship William, Capt. Hunter.'There was a spontaneous desire for illumination which wasduly carried into effect, and that night Saint John held highcarnival. The houses <strong>of</strong> Hon. Geo. Leonard, John Black,Esq., and many o<strong>the</strong>rs "flamed away from top to bottom.''The shipping in <strong>the</strong> harbour was brilliantly illuminated, cannonwere discharged from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong> p'~--k and <strong>the</strong> battery by <strong>the</strong>garrison and City <strong>Artillery</strong>, <strong>the</strong> stree^ resounded with cheersfor Nelson and <strong>the</strong> Navy, and altoge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> night was one<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most memorable in <strong>the</strong> early days <strong>of</strong> Saint John.The next muster roll <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corps which is extant is that <strong>of</strong>1809. That many changes had taken place in <strong>the</strong> sixteen yearssince formation will readily be seen by a glance at <strong>the</strong> nameswhich appear as follows :
