The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers are elsewhere stated.Westmoreland county also appears to have had some menwho could handle <strong>the</strong> rattling gun. When on August 3rd, 1825,Sir Howard Douglas visited Sackville <strong>the</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong> company,under command <strong>of</strong> Capt. Harris, attached to <strong>the</strong>2nd battalion,fired a salute <strong>of</strong> fifteen guns. In this county <strong>the</strong> artillery wereattached to <strong>the</strong> 2nd and 3rd battalions, a departure from <strong>the</strong>usual course. The names <strong>of</strong> Westmoreland artillery <strong>of</strong>ficers,so far as known, are given in <strong>the</strong> appendix.In 1825, on nth July, when Sir Howard Douglas visitedMiramichi a salute <strong>of</strong> seventeen guns was fired, and later in<strong>the</strong> year troops were called out because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great fire. Itdoes not appear, however, that <strong>the</strong>y were militia artillery.York county, which prior to 31st March, 1831, includedCarleton county, furnished considerable strength to <strong>the</strong> artillery<strong>of</strong> those times—but from inaccuracy in detail <strong>of</strong> available <strong>records</strong>it is difficult to determine <strong>the</strong> precise commands held by <strong>the</strong><strong>of</strong>ficers named in connection with it. In 1824 Major GeorgeMiNCHiN appears, his commission bearing date <strong>the</strong> 25th May<strong>of</strong> that year. In 1826 Richard Dibblee, <strong>the</strong>n a merchant <strong>of</strong>Fredericton, was lieutenant. He subsequently removed to Woodstockand became a company <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>the</strong>re. On loth September,1827, Sergeant-major James Holbrook was promoted toa lieutenantcy, and by orders <strong>of</strong> 20th March, 1832, he wasappointed to <strong>the</strong> captaincy <strong>of</strong> a new company, probably infantry.Abraham K. Smedes Wetmore, a prominent lawyer,-was on 22nd November, 1828, gazetted as lieutenant. He, too,afterwards removed to Woodstock, and succeeded on 17 thSeptember, 1833, to what was called <strong>the</strong> second captaincy.
