WHITE SPACES INNOVATION IN SWEDEN3.4.4 ‘Iconic Projects’ <strong>Innovation</strong> Plat<strong>for</strong>m ManagementThis is the characteristic approach taken <strong>in</strong> Västra Götaland region centred upon Gothenburg.The strategic decision was taken to concentrate <strong>in</strong>itially on meet<strong>in</strong>g the GrandChallenges of Climate Change and Healthcare, the first not least because the region hadbeen one of the first <strong>in</strong> the world to publish <strong>in</strong> 2003 a Climate Change response strategyreport „Gothenburg 2005‟ <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g policies <strong>for</strong> „Smart Energy‟ which has more recentlyevolved <strong>in</strong>to the strategic Climate Change target of Region Västra Götaland be<strong>in</strong>gtotally Fossil Fuel Free by 2030. This became known as the „Gothenburg Model‟ of theLisbon Strategy. However, hav<strong>in</strong>g got the regional position on that Grand Challengeworked out well <strong>in</strong> advance gave scope <strong>for</strong> the new environmental strategy to be downto-earthand practical. This br<strong>in</strong>gs together numerous regional clusters <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> renewableautomotive fuels, <strong>for</strong>est plastics and petroleum and health. At a more detailedlevel this assembles pilot projects mix<strong>in</strong>g expertise <strong>in</strong> cluster firm logistics, publictransport, vision<strong>in</strong>g (computer graphics and imag<strong>in</strong>g) and green account<strong>in</strong>g. It l<strong>in</strong>ks to aTriple Helix relationship with Chalmers University and firms like Astra AB. A comparable„Iconic Project‟ approach is be<strong>in</strong>g taken <strong>in</strong> healthcare where the project <strong>in</strong> question<strong>in</strong>volves a new Health Imag<strong>in</strong>g Facility at the University Medical School. Thisconnects transversally to digital signals process<strong>in</strong>g (data compression) and medicaldiagnostics eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g expertise at Chalmers University and one of its sp<strong>in</strong>out firmsMedfield Diagnostics.64
