Peter Schöffer, Gutenberg‟s apprentice, tried to simplify the illustrationprocess, notably by only offer<strong>in</strong>g text-illum<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> three colours <strong>for</strong> black, redand blue letters. But the medieval idea that <strong>in</strong>itial capitals should be illum<strong>in</strong>ated, albeitfrom a simpler palette, persisted. To allow illum<strong>in</strong>ated letters, Johann Fust, goldsmith,lawyer and <strong>in</strong>vestor <strong>in</strong> Gutenberg‟s venture developed a system of <strong>in</strong>sert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to thepress metal characters to shape the areas to be illum<strong>in</strong>ated. This process constituted oneof the more novel technological <strong>in</strong>novations of press-based pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g but it was complicatedand expensive. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, simplified illum<strong>in</strong>ation by hand rema<strong>in</strong>ed commonpractice until the eighteenth century, an <strong>in</strong>dication of <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g reverse adjacency.On the other hand, the Ma<strong>in</strong>z Psalter was the first pr<strong>in</strong>ted book to give the dateand place of pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and the pr<strong>in</strong>ters‟ names. Nevertheless, as comparison of the twomodels <strong>in</strong> Fig. 4.2 reveals, much also changed <strong>in</strong> a relatively short time. The key role ofcopyist-illustrator was demoted to that of anachronistic adjunct to the new process.
