4.4 | Steel Stud FramingSteel Stud FramingOverview: Steel framing, while more typical in commercialconstruction than residential, is a viable alternative toconventional wood stud framing. In large volumes, steelframing can provide cost savings for the builder. Althoughit does require different installation equipment and trainingin layout and construction, steel framing providesmore structural capacity than wood framing. 7INSTALLATIONConstruction Process: Although it requires a differentset of tools than wood stud framing, ease of constructionis comparable to standard wood framing techniques.Due to the sharp edges of site-cut steel members, safetyis a consideration. Installers should wear eye and handprotection at all times while framing. 8Speed of Construction: Speed is comparable to standardwood framing once a crew is properly trained.Delivery Method: Steel studs arrive on site in packagesalong with ceiling and floor tracks.Required Equipment: Screwdriver, c-clamp lockingpliers, sheet-metal locking/duckbill pliers, tape measure,straight-cut metal snips, miter saw with metal cuttingblade, screws (self-tapping preferred), level (with magneticstrip is convenient), work gloves, eye protection 9Specialized Labor: Individuals that do wood framingcan be trained to do steel stud framing.(Fig. 13) Steel stud walls are constructed with upper and lower guidetracks that are attached to the ceiling and floor.PERFORMANCEWind Load: Steel studs can be designed to withstandrequired lateral forces seismic loads derived from localconditions and requirements.(Fig. 14) After setting the guide tracks the studs are attached to createthe walls.
