It seems tempting to update this list with new typessuch as the Internet social media with Facebook and YouTube,which are often based on ubiquitous smartphones, or with televisiongenres such as talk shows or reality programs.Conclusion: The double nature of the confessionThe article about two of the most popular figures on the internet theStar Wars Kid and Antoine Dobson has used two of Michel Foucault’stheoretical concepts, the Panopticon and the confession, toexplain the paradoxical nature of their fame, which is based on aninvasion of their privacy. A comparison of the two has shown thattheir celebrity status is different after all with regard to the degreeof authenticity they signal in their self-representation.The genres of the two videos have migrated from respectively aprivate video and a news program into viral videos, which are oftentransgressive. The article has consequently discussed the question ofwhether the two videos and their distribution have functioned in apanoptical disciplinary way, or whether they are subversive. Theanswer suggested is that they are both at the same time, and the argumentfor this paradoxical answer is found in the double nature ofthe confession, so that both videos are instances of a culture of confessionthat both discipline and celebrate the pleasure of imaginingthat you a Jedi Knight or of exposing your personality in a newsprogram. This answer can also be related to the popularity of thesocial media in general.Volume03 144
