Several episodes of the seriesdeal with religiously motivated extremism and terror that is eitherexperienced or prevented by the Danish intelligence service. At firstthis means that the series is very affirmative towards the increasedauthority of the police, which should make you think that the seriesplaces the criminal parties in the subversive role. Though this is thecase dealing with very hardline extremism this does not describe theoverall intension of the series.The three main characters in The Protectors represent three differentmonotheistic religions. One is Muslim, one is Jewish, and one isChristian. But the series not only represents three major world faiths– it also attempts reconciliation between the three. The religiouscease-fire is underlined by the fact that one of the agents moves intoa closed Christian Free Church where he uncovers an old mosaic offather Abraham. Abraham is a grounding figure in all three religionsthat are collectively called Abrahamic religions. This model of atonementthroughout the series is again touched upon close to the endingof the second season. Here, the job of the agents is to protect aCatholic nun who goes by the name of Sister Abraham. This characteris inspired by an actual Danish nun – Kirsten Stoffregen Pedersen– who preaches atonement between the Abrahamic religions, whichgoes for the character as well. At some point in the series the threeagents actually end up staying in the Free Church together whichsymbolically and idiomatically implies that the three religions canstay under the same roof. Investigating a possible terror attack inDenmark, the Christian agent shows the mosaic to a Muslim womanand says: “Abraham came along”. This expression bears a doublemeaning: Abraham both came with the house and with all threefaiths. They all have the same point of origin.These two were my radio- and TV-examples. Before turning tomy literary examples it is already possible to connect these developmentsto Jenks’ theory of transgression. “Transgression is”, hewrites, “a deeply reflexive act of denial and affirmation” (Jenks,2003: 2). This means that to transgress is as well a reference to thetransgressed, the boundary, and through such transgression newinsight, new epistemologies are gained. Basically, the transgressionin crime fiction is, as it appears historically, a generic transgression:Volume03 235
