13.4 Smoke <strong>and</strong> FireThe following procedures are recommended, in case of engine smokeor fire:Fire at the engine on the ground (no direct fire): disembark thegyrocopter quickly but safely.Fire at the engine during start (no direct fire): Fly flat turns, l<strong>and</strong> aspractical (even if this was against the wind).Fire at the engine during flight (no direct fire): Emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing,disembark the gyrocopter quickly.Im Flug, höher als 100 m:quickly.Emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing, leave gyrocopter13.5 GlidingThe speed for best gliding is 100 km/h.Glide ratio with engine idle 1:4Glide ratio with engine off 1:313.6 Emergency l<strong>and</strong>inga) Emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing:An emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing is when an emergency situation occurs duringflight which makes an immediate l<strong>and</strong>ing necessary (e.g. Fire on board,heavy damage or malfunction of the gyrocopter, engine failure, lifethreatening condition of the pilot or passenger).b) Safety l<strong>and</strong>ing:A safety l<strong>and</strong>ing is when the pilot decides to l<strong>and</strong> to avoid an impendingemergency situation, which has not yet occured (e.g. unexpectetmeteorological conditions which do not permit a continued flight,unusual behavior of the engine or the pilot got sick).<strong>Flight</strong> <strong>and</strong> operation manual G 4-2 <strong>Rev</strong>ision <strong>3.0</strong> – 09.04.2013 108
c) L<strong>and</strong>ing with defective undercarriage or flat tire:Regular approach. L<strong>and</strong> with high angle of attack <strong>and</strong> minimum speed,slow the gyrocopter down with the rotor <strong>and</strong> hold direction with therudder. After successful l<strong>and</strong>ing the engine is to be shut downimmediately putting the switches for “MAG1“, “MAG2“ <strong>and</strong> “masterswitch” in OFF position.d) L<strong>and</strong>ing with engine power:Look for emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing field <strong>and</strong> prepare l<strong>and</strong>ing accordingly. Payattention to wind direction <strong>and</strong> speed <strong>and</strong> if possible l<strong>and</strong> against thewind <strong>and</strong> up-hill.e) L<strong>and</strong>ing without engine power:Look for emergency l<strong>and</strong>ing field <strong>and</strong> prepare l<strong>and</strong>ing accordingly. Payattention to wind direction <strong>and</strong> speed <strong>and</strong> if possible l<strong>and</strong> against thewind <strong>and</strong> up-hill.13.7 Rescue system:Because the gyrocopter is equipped with a rotor system which isconstantly in autorotation during flight, no further rescue system isinstalled. For this reason it is important to look after the entire rotorsystem including the rotor head with special care.13.8 Miscellaneous emergency procedures13.8.1 Loss of manouverability:Try to reach a large l<strong>and</strong>ing field by using the possibly remaining rudder<strong>and</strong> changing altitude with engine power.Fly wide <strong>and</strong> flat turns.L<strong>and</strong> against the wind direction, if possible.13.8.2 Loss of maneuverability around pitch axis:The air speed to maintain horizontal flight will vary depending on the CGposition.Steer course with side rudder pedals.Control speed <strong>and</strong> altitude with engine power.<strong>Flight</strong> <strong>and</strong> operation manual G 4-2 <strong>Rev</strong>ision <strong>3.0</strong> – 09.04.2013 109
