Byearnest prayer and living faith great victories will be gained. Someparents have not realized <strong>the</strong> responsibilities resting upon <strong>the</strong>m andhave neglected <strong>the</strong> religious education of <strong>the</strong>ir children. In <strong>the</strong> morning<strong>the</strong> Christian’s first thoughts should be upon God. Worldly labor andself-interest should be secondary. Children should be taught to respectand reverence <strong>the</strong> hour of prayer. Be<strong>for</strong>e leaving <strong>the</strong> house <strong>for</strong> labor,all <strong>the</strong> family should be called toge<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r, or <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>rin <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s absence, should plead fervently with God to keep <strong>the</strong>mthrough <strong>the</strong> day. Come in humility with a heart full of tenderness andwith a sense of <strong>the</strong> temptations and dangers be<strong>for</strong>e yourselves andyour children; by faith bind <strong>the</strong>m upon <strong>the</strong> altar, entreating <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<strong>the</strong> care of <strong>the</strong> Lord. Ministering angels will guard children who arethus dedicated to God. It is <strong>the</strong> duty of Christian parents, morningand evening, by earnest prayer and persevering faith, to make a hedgeabout <strong>the</strong>ir children. They should patiently instruct <strong>the</strong>m, kindly anduntiringly teach <strong>the</strong>m how to live in order to please God.Impatience in <strong>the</strong> parents excites impatience in <strong>the</strong> children. Passionmanifested by <strong>the</strong> parents creates passion in <strong>the</strong> children andstirs up <strong>the</strong> evils of <strong>the</strong>ir nature. Some parents correct <strong>the</strong>ir childrenseverely in a spirit of impatience, and often in passion. Such correctionsproduce no good result. In seeking to correct one evil, <strong>the</strong>ycreate two. Continual censuring and whipping hardens children andweans <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong>ir parents. Parents should first learn to control<strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y can more successfully control <strong>the</strong>ir children.Every time <strong>the</strong>y lose self-control, and speak and act impatiently, <strong>the</strong>ysin against God. They should first reason with <strong>the</strong>ir children, clearlypoint out <strong>the</strong>ir wrongs, show <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir sin, and impress upon <strong>the</strong>mthat <strong>the</strong>y have not only sinned against <strong>the</strong>ir parents, but against God.With your own heart subdued and full of pity and sorrow <strong>for</strong> yourerring children, pray with <strong>the</strong>m be<strong>for</strong>e correcting <strong>the</strong>m. Then yourcorrection will not cause your children to hate you. They will loveyou. They will see that you do not punish <strong>the</strong>m because <strong>the</strong>y have putyou to inconvenience, or because you wish to vent your displeasureupon <strong>the</strong>m; but from a sense of duty, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir good, that <strong>the</strong>y may notbe left to grow up in sin.Some parents have failed to give <strong>the</strong>ir children a religious educationand have also neglected <strong>the</strong>ir school education.
