380 Testimonies for the Church Volume 1to its precepts, and like Abraham of old command their householdsafter them, the poor children with such an influence around them thinktheir parents unnecessarily exacting and overcareful in regard to theirassociates. They naturally desire to follow the example of worldly,pleasure-loving professors.In these days, persecution and reproach for Christ’s sake arescarcely known. Very little self-denial and sacrifice is necessary inorder to put on a form of godliness and have the name upon the churchbook; but to live in such a manner that our ways will be pleasing toGod, and our names registered in the book of life, will require watchfulnessand prayer, self-denial and sacrifice on our part. ProfessedChristians are no example for the youth, only as far as they followChrist. Right actions are unmistakable fruits of true godliness. TheJudge of all the earth will give everyone according to his works. Childrenwho follow Christ have a warfare before them; they have a dailycross to bear in coming out from the world and being separate, andimitating the life of Christ.* * * * *
Chapter 75—Walk in the LightI was shown that God’s people dwell too much under a cloud. It isnot His will that they should live in unbelief. Jesus is light, and in Himis no darkness at all. His children are the children of light. They are [406]renewed in His image, and called out of darkness into His marvelouslight. He is the light of the world, and so also are they that followHim. They shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.The more closely the people of God strive to imitate Christ, the moreperseveringly will they be pursued by the enemy; but their nearnessto Christ strengthens them to resist the efforts of our wily foe to drawthem from Christ.I was shown that there was too much comparing ourselves amongourselves, taking fallible mortals for a pattern, when we have a sure,unerring pattern. We should not measure ourselves by the world, norby the opinions of men, nor by what we were before we embraced thetruth. But our faith and position in the world, as they now are, mustbe compared with what they would have been if our course had beencontinually onward and upward since we professed to be followers ofChrist. This is the only safe comparison that can be made. In everyother there will be self-deception. If the moral character and spiritualstate of God’s people do not correspond with the blessings, privileges,and light which have been conferred upon them, they are weighed inthe balance, and angels make the report, Wanting.With some the knowledge of their true state seems to be hiddenfrom them. They see the truth, but perceive not its importance or itsclaims. They hear the truth, but do not fully understand it, becausethey do not conform their lives to it, and therefore are not sanctifiedthrough obeying it. And yet they rest as unconcerned and well satisfiedas though the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, as tokenof God’s favor, went before them. They profess to know God, butin works deny Him. They reckon themselves His chosen, peculiarpeople, yet His presence and power to save to the uttermost are seldommanifested among them. How great is the darkness of such! yet they381
