ٌُٓ‏ِه ‏ُةَََََُۡۡ96 Backbiting – A Cancer in our SocietyChashm-e-karam ĥo aysī kay miṫ jāye ĥar khaṭāKoī gunāĥ mujĥ say na Shayṭān karā sakayAll my sins get wiped away; may I be blessed soAnd the devils fail to push me towards the sinning [flow]Y َ ُa ٰ َ< ٰ MََSeized by Allah’s hidden planُ ا‎J K َ Lلهِ‏ ال ۡ غَ‏ عَ‏ لَيهِ‏ رَ‏ ‏ْح ‏َمةُ‏ الۡ2ِbَ َ اZ‏ۡ‏]^ ۡ ا < َLShaykh Sayyidunā Bakr Muzanī ‏ِنى has stated, ‘When you see a person advocatingother’s shortcomings (meaning, who always reveals others secrets and backbites aboutpeople), then know that he is surely the enemy of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ and is seized by Allah’shidden plan.’ (Tanbīĥ-ul-Mughtarīn, pp. 197)Back-fence talkالۡ‏ Shaykh Sayyidunā Bishr Ḥāfīsaid: I am surprised at people who backbite عَلَيۡ‏about their Islamic brothers behind their backs and dishonour them; but when theycome in front of them, they display their utmost admiration and start praising them.(Tanbīĥ-ul-Mughtarīn, pp. 197)کَافِى الل ‏ِهرَح ۡ مَ‏Abomination form hypocrisyWhen Sayyidunā Imām Ja’far Ṣādiq عَلَيْهِ‏ رَحْمَةُ‏ اللهِ‏ الۡ‏ خَالِق detached himself from all the peopleقَوِی [and worldly matters], Shaykh Sayyidunā Sufyān Šaurīand said, ‘Because of your detachment, people are missing your grace and beneficence.’In reply, he رَحمْ‏ ‏َةُ‏ االلهِ‏ تَعَالىٰ‏ ‏َلَيْه read these two couplets:approached him عَلَيْهِ‏ رَحْمَةُ‏ اللهِ‏ الۡ‏َ ۡسُ‏َ+ِX‏ٍ‏ ُ Eِ اŽا ِ2ِ@ وَاG @ @ َ ا‎8َ‎‏ۡ‏َ ۡ ُ [‏ِ a ۡ rَ‎‏ُُ[‏d‏ُ‏ ۡ x ُ‏ ا‏ ۡ ُ f ۡ [‏ َ ن َ ۡۡ ُ‘‏ب 2َ ا‏ ۡ ‏[‏‎1َ‎‏َءُ‏ ذِ‏ ذة وَا‏ ۡ ‏[‏‎1َ‎‏َ‏‏َ[َد‏وŒ‏َةو ‏َ رِبِ‏‏َرِ‏ ‏ِبAَPeople’s loyalties have passed, like the day, yesterdayAnd people have plunged in their own contemplationPeople show-off their love for others and their affectionIn reality their hearts are filled with hatred and aversion(Tażkira-tul-Auliyā, pp. 22)
