ََۡۡ296 Backbiting – A Cancer in our Societymother immediately reprimanded him saying, ‘You have backbitten against him becauseyou called him lazy and slandered him.’ Therefore, he repented promptly. Now themembers of the household were in such a state that they kept cautioning each other anddiscussing whether what they talked about would fall under backbiting or not.Gunāĥaun say mujĥ ko bachā Yā IlāĥīMujĥay nayk bandaĥ banā Yā IlāĥīSafeguard me from sins O Allah!Turn me into a pious individual O Allah!Y َ ُa ٰ َ< ٰ MَاJY َ ُa ٰ َ< ٰ Mَََُ ا‎J K L َُِfۡeَۡOَُ ا‎J K L ََ ََL ۡ ‏^[ا < 2ۡ]ُ َ ا‎Jdۡ]ُcَ َ اZ‏ۡ‏2ِۡb < ‏^[ا ۡ َLاbZ‏ِ‏ا اMِ‎ا27. Saying ‘he is asleep like a dead man’Sayyidunā Shaykh Sa’dī هِ‏ الۡ‏ said: I have been staying up during the night topray since when I was young. Once I spent a night along with my father reciting Quran andpraying. Some people were asleep close to us. I said to my father, ‘No one is amongst themwho would get up and at least pray 2 Nafl (of Taĥajjud); they are sleeping as if they aredead.’ My father replied, ‘Son! It would’ve been better for you to stay asleep all night becausenow by staying up you got trapped in the sin of backbiting.’ (Rūḥ-ul-Bayān, vol. 9, pp. 89)عَ‏ لَيْهِ‏ رَحمۡ‏ ‏َةُ‏ ال ل‏هَادِی14 Examples of backbiting about Nafl worshipDear Islamic brothers! From this parable we learn that neglecting Nafl worship andsleeping all night is better for a person who stays up all night and worships but also fallsinto backbiting. Praying Taĥajjud and performing Nafl prayers definitely earns reward,but backbiting deserves the punishment. In this parable, there are many Madanī pearlsfor those who, without Shar’ī justification, commit backbiting such as:1. So-and-so does not offer Ṣalāt-ul-Ishrāq and Ṣalāt-uḍ-Ḍuḥā.2. I tried to wake him up for Ṣalāt-ul-Fajr (or Taĥajjud) but he did not get up.
