Backbiting – A Cancer in our Society 61You love the slaves so…, the aforementioned narration gives a glimpse of the depth of love of the ٰ سُبْح نَ‏ الله عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏Holy Prophet صَ‏ َّ! االلهُ‏ تَعَالىٰ‏ ‏َلَيْهِ‏ وَاٰلِهٖ‏ وَسَلَّم for his slaves and followers. A’lā Ḥaḍrat’s brother, ShaykhḤasan Razā Khān نَّان has written this beautiful couplet (in Urdu):‏َمةُ‏ ال ْ حَ عَ‏ لَيْهِ‏ رَ‏ ‏ْحTum ko to ghulāmaun say ĥay kucĥ aysī maḥabbatĤay tark-e-adab warnaĥ kaĥayn ĥam pay fidā ĥoYou have such love for your slaves, it is against mannersOtherwise, we would say you have sacrificed yourself for us(Żauq-e-Na’at)A warning to the backbitersThe aforementioned Ḥadīš is a lesson for those who, without any justification underIslamic law, reveal weaknesses and shortcomings of people to others and indulge inbackbiting; like the ones who speak ill about a student to his teacher, a son to his father,an employee to his employer, a disciple to his Murshid. Thus, carrying the burden of amajor sin and tarnishing the reputation of those people in the eyes of the beholder. TheyI wish we never fall in the sightsof our Murshid. I wish repeatedlymillions of hearty wishes that westay in the good books of ourMurshid.•might not realize that their actions might causeseveral problems – problems which every intelligentperson can easily comprehend when a student fallsfrom grace in the sight of his teacher, when asubordinate falls in the sight of his Nigrān (groupleader) and when a disciple (Murīd) falls in the eyesof his Murshid (spiritual guide). It is my earnestwish that the person backbiting would stop and think what would happen to him if hehimself was humiliated and degraded in front of his teacher or spiritual guide. I wish wenever fall in the sights of our Murshid. I wish repeatedly millions of hearty wishes thatwe stay in the good books of our Murshid.Sadā Pīr-o-Murshid raĥayn ĥam say rāzīKabĥī bĥī na ĥaun yeĥ khafā Yā Ilāĥī!Allah! May our Pīr stay well-pleasedAnd may he never be displeased
