ََِّۡ ِۡٓ192 Backbiting – A Cancer in our Society…My eyes were mistakenۡ’َ ُ “ J ! Did you notice the kind of noble treatment Rūḥullāĥ, Prophet ‘Īsā عَلَيْهِ‏ السَّلاَ‏ م gaveا اthe person who swore! The renowned exegetist of the Quran, Shaykh Muftī Aḥmad YārKhān Na’īmī رَحمْ‏ ‏َةُ‏ االلهِ‏ تَعَالىٰ‏ ‏َلَيْه has stated while trying to depict the emotions of Prophet ‘Īsā‏.عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ I consider you truthful based on swearing by the name of Allah ‏:عَ!ٰ‏ نَبِيِ‏‏ْهِ‏ الصَّ‏ لٰوة ُ وَالسَّلاَ‏ م‏ّنَا وَ‏ عَلَيA believer can never swear on a lie in the name of Allah ‏,عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ because the believer hasthe respect of the name of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ ingrained in his heart. I assume that I must havehad a wrong impression and that my eyes must have been mistaken. (Mirāt-ul-Manājīḥ,vol. 6, pp. 623)May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ have mercy upon him and forgive us for his sake!Method of repentance & forgivenessIf somebody had made the mistakeof accusing others of performingblack magic, without a valid causeunder Islamic law, then theyshould plead to Almighty Allah forthe absolution.•ِ ِN ٰ ۡ ِ وَا ََ! Mََ ٰ ُ ا‎J K َ LEَ ۡ‏َهِ‏ اFGِI EI think this narrative should be sufficient to clarify the issue. In such circumstances,patience is the key else, it will be very hard to save yourself from sins like backbiting,bearing negative opinion and laying false allegations.If somebody had made the mistake of accusing others of performing black magic,عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ without a valid cause under Islamic law, then they should plead to Almighty Allahfor the absolution. Further, they should also fulfil all the requirements of repentance and َاِ‏ا-ِ‏وOَ‎they should get the person who was accused, likethe daughter-in-law or the sister-in-law, to forgivethem. Just a mere ‘sorry’ will not suffice. The wayyou blatantly disgraced her and hurt her feelings,now with the same degree of humbleness, plead forforgiveness with hands folded out of respect. Youmust keep appealing for forgiveness until they wholeheartedlyforgive you. Furthermore, you must alsoadmit to all the people you had told that you were falsely accusing her. It is definitelytrue that your ego will not agree on asking for forgiveness. It is entirely dependent uponyou whether you decide to bear a small degree of worldly shame or to be worthy of beingpunished and disgraced in a higher degree in the Hereafter.
