‏ِه ‏َم ‏ُةۡExamples of Backbiting 34514 Examples of pointless conversationAlas! Good company can rarely be found these days. Many apparently righteous peopleare indulging in meaningless conversation instead of uttering useful and beneficial‏,عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ speech. If only we would meet other people for the sake of the Allah of the Universeand meetings are limited to making necessary conversation. The Beloved and Blessedتَعَالىٰ‏ ‏َلَيْهِ‏ وَاٰلِهٖ‏ وَسَلَّم Rasūlُhas said, ‘A good thing from a person’s Islam is that he leaves صَ‏ َّ! االلهpointless things.’ (Muwaṭṭā Imām Mālik, vol. 2, pp. 403, Ḥadīš 1718)The Guiding Light of Spirituality, the Scribe of Islamic Jurisprudence, Muftī Amjad ‘AlīA’ẓamī الۡ‏ elaborates on this Ḥadīš after citing it, ‘That is, one should notindulge in things that are not beneficial. He should not divert his tongue, heart, andother body parts towards meaningless things.’ (Baĥār-e-Sharī’at, vol. 16, pp. 163) ‏ِهالۡ‏ عَ‏ لَيهِ‏ رَ‏ ‏ْح ‏َم ‏ُةاللقَوِی الل عَ‏ لَيْهِ‏ رَ‏ ‏ْحRemember, making pointless conversation is not a sin; however, it is better to refrainfrom it. Similarly, Ḥujjat-ul-Islam, Imām Muhammad Ghazālī وَا ‏ِلى has said, ‘Toengage in non-beneficial conversation and to add extra words to necessary conversationis not Ḥarām; however, it is better to abstain from it.’ (Iḥyā-ul-‘Ulūm, vol. 3, pp. 143)There is a high chance that a person will indulge in sinful conversation when he is makingpointless and meaningless conversation; therefore, silence is a virtue. In our society today,at times, such unnecessary questions are asked that embarrass the one questioned; and ifthe one questioned is not careful; he can be implicated in sin. At times, these questionsare asked for a reason in which case they are pointless. I offer fourteen such examples; ifthere is a need, so be it; otherwise, if one can live without them, then protect the Muslimsfrom embarrassment and being implicated in sins.1. What’s up?2. Man, these days you do not supplicate?3. Brother, are you upset?4. Man, it seems that you did not enjoy yourself.5. How much did this car cost you?6. What year, make and model?7. What is the going rate of the houses in your community?8. Man, inflation is too high.
