312 Backbiting – A Cancer in our SocietyC He has a dark or tanned-complexion, etc. Any attribute, whatever it may be, whichhe would dislike, falls under backbiting.Examples of backbiting about his lineage are:C His father is a cobbler or C A street-sweeper.Instances of backbiting of one’s character would include phrases like:C He is immoral, ill-mannered, miser, arrogant, show-off, ill-tempered, coward, incapable,weak at heart and careless.Examples of his inadequate deeds would be talking about his actions which pertain tohis religion:C He is a thief. C Liar C Alcoholic C A dishonest person. C He is a tyrant.C He is lazy in performing his Ṣalāĥ or paying his Zakāĥ; orC He does not perform his Rukū’ and Sujūd properly.C He does not safguard himself from impurities.C He is not kind to his parents. C He does not donate his Zakāĥ to the rightful place.C He does not divide Zakāĥ fairly.C While observing fast, he spends his time indulged in sins and backbiting or proclaimingthat he does not refrain from dishonouring others.Backbiting in matters of worldly affairs include:C He is not very sophisticated. C He is very disrespectful in his dealing with people.C He does not assume any rights of others on himself.C He is well aware of his rights over others. C He talks too much. C He eats a lot.C He sleeps too much. C He sleeps at odd times; or C He sits wherever he likes.Examples of backbiting about his apparel would be statements like:C His cuffs are too loose.
