‏ِه ‏َم ‏ُة‏ِه ‏َمَِّۡ ِۡٓ304 Backbiting – A Cancer in our Society34. Gift for backbitersSomeone relayed to Shaykh Sayyidunā Ḥasan Baṣrī الۡ‏ that someone hadbackbitten about him. The Shaykh لَيْه sent the backbiter a gift of dates and alsoa message that I heard that you have donated me your good deeds so here are dates inreturn for you. (Minĥāj-ul-‘Ābidīn, pp. 65)قَوِی الل عَ‏ لَيْهِ‏ رَ‏ ‏ْحرَحمْ‏ ‏َةُ‏ ال لهُ‏ تَعَالىٰ‏ ‏َعMay Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ‏ have mercy upon him and forgive us for his sake! َِ ِN ٰ ۡ ِ وَا ََ! Mََ ٰ ُ ا‎J K َ LEَ ۡ‏َهِ‏ اG F اِ‏ ِI Eا-ِ‏وOَ‎Give Du’ā to a backbiterDear Islamic brothers! You see how Auliyā of Allah call people to righteousness! Whenthe backbiter got the gift of dates, how impressed he would have been by the sage’smindset. This is also a fact the one who is being backbitten remains at a gain, becausethe good deeds of the backbiter get transferred into the Book of Deeds of the victim andsince someone is giving us the good deeds, he has to be our well-wisher. Therefore,rather than quarrelling with them we should make supplication for them.Jo ghībat say chughlī say reĥtā ĥay bach karMayn daytā ĥūn us ko Du’ā-e-MadīnaĥFrom backbiting and gossiping who refrainsDu’ā of Madīnaĥ, from me he attainsY َ ُa ٰ َ< ٰ Mََُ ا‎J K َ Lۡ2ِbَ َ اZ‏ۡ‏]^ ۡ ا < َL35. A gift of ‘Iṭr (fragrance)A Muballigh of Dawat-e-Islami stated, ‘I heard that so-and-so spoke ill of me. I knew thetale of Shaykh Sayyidunā Ḥasan Baṣrī, so to follow him; I sent a bottle offragrance to him. I also requested the messenger, through whom the gift was being sent,to reform the backbiter and to inform him as to why the gift was sent. Once, a few Islamicbrothers and I were going somewhere and we passed by the shop of the person who hadbackbitten against me.
