Symptom Cause RemedyThere is excessive leakage The packing gl<strong>and</strong> is not adjusted properly. Tighten the gl<strong>and</strong> nuts.from the stuffing box.The stuffing box is not packed properly. Check the packing <strong>and</strong> repack the box.The motor requiresexcessive power.The mechanical-seal parts are worn.The mechanical seal is overheating.The shaft sleeve is scored.The discharge head has dropped below therated point <strong>and</strong> is pumping too much liquid.The liquid is heavier than expected.The stuffing-box packing is too tight.Rotating parts are rubbing against each other.The impeller clearance is too tight.Replace the worn parts.Check the lubrication <strong>and</strong> cooling lines.Machine or replace the shaft sleeve as necessary.Install a throttle valve.
