Principal's Report<br />
These communications are grouped into international, UK and Scottish developments, followed by<br />
details <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> news and events:-<br />
International<br />
General Council Berlin<br />
The General Council Statutory Half Yearly Meeting took place in Berlin over the weekend <strong>of</strong> the 14-<br />
16 June 2012. In addition to the meeting the events also included an honorary degree ceremony <strong>for</strong><br />
Mr David McAllister, Prime Minister <strong>of</strong> Lower Saxony, a panel debate on the challenges facing the<br />
UK, Germany and the Eurozone and a dinner <strong>for</strong> <strong>Edinburgh</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Art guests. It was a very<br />
successful weekend which did an excellent job in enhancing the <strong>University</strong>’s European and<br />
international reputation.<br />
Senatus<br />
A Senate Briefing on Internationalisation was held on 6 June 2012. The external speaker was<br />
alumnus Dr William Lawton, Director, Observatory on Borderless Higher Education.<br />
Business Opportunities in Latin America: Shifting Perspectives<br />
I was very pleased to give the opening welcome at a <strong>University</strong> event organised by <strong>Edinburgh</strong><br />
students and the Latin American Society which took place on 17th May. The Forum, the first <strong>of</strong> its<br />
kind, brought together Latin American experts to discuss industries which have been driving the<br />
region's progress and have established it as one <strong>of</strong> the most dynamic markets in the world.<br />
India<br />
Vice Principal International and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jeremy Bradshaw, Dean International CMVM, visited<br />
India in April 2012. Links were explored with:<br />

National Institute <strong>of</strong> Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore – CJD, prions, autism.<br />
Indian Institute <strong>of</strong> Science, Bangalore - open to receiving <strong>Edinburgh</strong> PhD students <strong>for</strong> short<br />
visits and jointly supervised PhDs.<br />
National Centre <strong>for</strong> Biological Science, Bangalore - Clinical Research Training (MD-PhD<br />
and PhD-MD / DSc).<br />
National Rural Health Mission, Government <strong>of</strong> Karnataka – clinical e-learning.<br />
Science & Innovation Network - funding programmes and priority areas <strong>for</strong> collaboration.<br />
Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi – medical training and e-learning, especially in<br />
paediatrics, surgery, virology and genetics (rickets).<br />
Delhi <strong>University</strong> - visit coincided with Delhi <strong>University</strong>’s Foundation Day celebrations<br />
attended by the ICCR President. DU has ambitions in the e-learning and online lectures. It<br />
was suggested that the Our Changing World lecture series be shared with DU to kick start a<br />
partnership in blended learning.<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Biotechnology, Government <strong>of</strong> India - MD PhD career track under<br />
discussion with the Medical Council <strong>of</strong> India and Wellcome Trust.
