off from doing the first thing that springs to
mind. This was clearly because the failure of
the US after invading Iraq and the everlasting
instability in the Middle East. Thus, the
US had to come to the table to negotiate with
Iran instead of staring a war. The negotiations
launched in 2006 with five permanent
members of the United Nations and Germany
have yielded reconciliation in July 2015.
Having democrats in power in the USA with
President Obama, and Hassan Rouhani’s
taking office as the President of Iran following
the end of irreconcilable Ahmadinejad’s
term of office have also worked in favor of
this reconciliation. Within the scope of this
understanding, Iran will limit its uranium
enrichment activities and open the doors
of its nuclear facilities to the IAEA, and in
turn, the economic and financial sanctions
imposed on Iran will be lifted, yet the weapon
embargo will continue to prevail for a
while. Immediately after this understanding
reached on July 14, people hit the streets to
celebrate in Iran. Considering the country’s
oil income has dropped by 160 billion USD
since 2012, one can easily understand why
the Iranians are so happy. We should also
note that the end of the embargo would not
only bring economic prosperity but it could
also embody the chance of a more liberated
life for the people.
hiç gerek yok. Bu iki güçlü ülke, bölgenin
oyun kurucuları konumunda. Ancak nükleer
uzlaşı ile birlikte İran’ın sahalara geri
dönmesinin ardından Türk yetkililer bir
açıklamada bulunarak İran’ın mezhepçi
politikaları bırakıp bölgeyi domine etme
çabalarından vazgeçmesini istedi. Acaba bu
istek, ekonomik ilişkiler için uygun bir zemin
arama yolu niteliğinde miydi? İstanbul
Ticaret Üniversitesi’nden Doç. Dr. Ahmet
Yükleyen de bu iki ülkenin daha büyük
ekonomik hedefler için rekabetçi politikalardan
vazgeçmesi gerektiği konusunda
şu sözleri dile getiriyor: “Her iki ülke de
siyasi rekabeti bir kenara bırakıp ekonomik
çıkarlara odaklanırsa çok daha iyi olacak.
Elbette bunun için iki ülkenin de bölgedeki
siyasi hedeflerini gözden geçirmeleri gerekiyor.
A COMPETITIVE POLICY OR ECONOMIC
COOPERATION?
Although it was not around the table, Turkey
was one of the countries on which this table
would have major implications. Yes, Turkey
was not a part of the nuclear haggle with
Iran; yet, it is crystal clear that the result will
have not only a political but also an economic
impact. And the longstanding competition
between Turkey and Iran over the region
goes without saying. These two powerful
countries are the key players in the region.
However, after Iran got back on stage thanks
to the nuclear reconciliation, Turkish officials
made a statement calling Iran to give
up on its sectarian policies and stop trying
to dominate the region. After all, was
this request made in order to find a proper
foundation to develop economic relations?
Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Yükleyen from Istanbul
Commerce University said: “If both countries
can tone down their political rivalry in the
region for higher economic interests, they
can both be better off. This certainly requires
revisiting their political ambitions in the
region. The way forward for regional peace
