260 HERALDRY OF YORK MINSTER.
Amongst many items, mention is made of "a black velvet gown
" with a black laice furred with squyrels, and faced with jenets furr, some-
" thing decayed;" "one single gowne of black sattan garded with velvet,
"very olde;" "one black velvet jacket imbrothured with silver and faced
" with luserdes, and furred thorowly with whyte lambe " "a black velvet
;
"jyrkine, with golde lace, having xvi. buttons enamelled black, lined with
" sarcenet, very olde."
Here, also, are mentioned his robes as Knight of the Garter : " a
" kyrtle of crimson velvet, and a robe of blew velvet, and a hode, &c."
Also "a hole horse harness, for a trapper, sett with whit and blew,
" and enamelled ;
" another harness of red velvet, containing six pieces ;
and one other harness of " black velvet imbrothured with silver gilt,
"cont'g vii. "
pieces;" iii.
paynes of cloth of gold, and ii. of tawny
"velvet, with a redd dragon lokyng forthe of a whit castell, mad of
" sylver tys-say," the crest of the Cliffords.
" Item iii.
rydynge hatts, one
"of cremsyn velvet, with a golde bande;" another of "tawney velvet
"with a golde bande, and laced with silver laice;" "one murreon (morion),
"covered with cremesyn vellvett and laid with lacce of golde ;" and so on.
A small stock of "app'ell in a cheist," probably belonging to Lady
Eleanor Brandon, is also mentioned "
; a frenge gowne, with a long trayne
" "
of black satten, edged with black velvet ;
"a purple satten gowne,
" playted with five pieces of gold aglets garded with velvet, faced with
" "
grayn coloured sarcenet ;
"a kirtle of cremesyn damask, with one
" over bodie of satten of bridges, and welted with cremyson velvett "
;
" one pair of sleeves of black velvett, of the French fac'on ;
" " ii.
parre
"of velvet shoys, grene, redd, and white." This, of course, is
only a
portion, but enough for a specimen of a lady's wardrobe in those days.
But it is noticeable that, though everything was strong and costly
velvet, satin, sarcenet, gold lace and fur yet many articles are described
as old and worn. A wardrobe at that time lasted for a life and more,
and was handed down from generation to generation.
Of the rooms, only two bedchambers are mentioned, which seem to
have been entirely destitute of what we should deem necessary furniture,
only a " coppard," and one stool. Not a glass, a carpet, or even a chair,
appears in any of the rooms ;
but the beds must have been magnificent,
and, judging from " federbedds, beds of down," bolsters, pillows, blankets,
&c., very comfortable.
In "La Strange Chamb'r" (i.e.
the state bedchamber), the tester of
the bed was of " tynsell and black vellvett with armes, having curtains of
"sylke with frynges."
In the " corner chamb'r," the tester was of " black vellvett and
tynsel, with curtaynes of silk, and frynges of silke and golde."
