and make a fortress of his Manor of
Rest, circa 1374-1392. Archbishop Rotherham was living there in 1500,
but it was finally dismantled, and sold under the Act for the Sale of
Dean and Chapter Lands, 1647.*
There is also mention of instruments at the quarry at Stapleton,
" viz., mallietez, gavelockes, and weges," and, 1419, of a payment of ^10 to
" Sir John Langton, knight, and lord of Huddlestone, for five rods of quarry
"bought of him at the same place, and one rod given to the fabric:"
this seems to have been carried by cart unto the water: and in 1460
" paid in pence for one pipe of wine ^3 6s. 8
