THE HERALDRY OF YORK MINSTER.
The sequel of the other Dauphinate of Vienne is soon told. In 1281
the Burgundian line dying out, the lordship passed to the house of
"La Tour de Pin," which, in the person of Guiges VIII., was offered
royal dignity by Louis the Bavarian. Guiges'
successor, Hubert II., having
lost his son, 1335, made over his lands to Charles of Valois, stipulating
that the independence and privilege thereof should be maintained, and, in
order that the title should not become extinct like the other, that the
eldest son of the King of France should always bear the title of Dauphin.
EDMOND CROUCHBACK, EARL OF LANCASTER.
Edmond Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster (plate 7),
was the second son
of Henry III. and Eleanor of Provence, and therefore younger brother of
Edward I. There is a legend that he acquired that sobriquet from his
deformity, and that in consequence, though he was the eldest son, his
brother Edward was in infancy preferred to his place. This is very
unlikely, as there was a difference of six years between the births of the
two children, so that the eldest son was already beyond the age of
and must have been well known to all the Court. The term
his back, in token of a vow made for him or by him, that he should go
to Jerusalem. He was brought up at Windsor with his sister Beatrice,
afterwards married to John of Bretagne. Four ladies in waiting, four
sergeants-at-arms, a clerk, cook, washerwomen, seven valets, and five
chaplains, forming their establishment, under the control of the constable
of the castle. It is also mentioned in the rolls that wine and venison,
with oaks for firewood from the forest, were supplied for their use, together
with twenty-four silver spoons and twelve salt-cellars ;
and that a special
order was given to the forester that Prince Edmond shall be permitted to
hunt as often as he pleases in the forest, and carry away whatever he
pleases.
In
1255, the Pope took the opportunity of the death of the Emperor
Frederick II. to offer the crown of Sicily to Richard Earl of Cornwall ;
and on his discreet refusal, he offered it to Henry III. for his second son
Edmond. Henry and Eleanor, delighted at the prospect of this acquisition
of dignity for their family, immediately ordered a seal to be made, with
the young prince enthroned, and crowned with the diadem of Sicily,
bearing the orb and sceptre in his hands. But troubles with Scotland
prevented their completing the acceptance by force of arms. Manfred,
natural son of the Emperor, usurped the throne, and Henry contented
himself with presenting his son in his royal robes at the opening of his
