314 THE HERALDRY OF YORK MINSTER.
sons Drogo, Walter, Richard, Osbert, and Simon of whom Richard, on
the death of his elder brothers, styled himself Fitz-Pons. His eldest son,
Walter, married the heiress of the Castle of Clifford, and assumed the
name.* Simon, also called Fitz-Pons, inherited the manor of Swell, and was
amongst the benefactors of Tewkesbury. His son, Pontius Fitz-Simon, who
held eight knights' fees in the honour of Gloucester, afterwards Signavit se
crucc cum Rege. Ric., or, in other words, became a crusader with Richard I.
His great-grandson Hugh married Helewisia, coheiress of Wm. Malet,
baron of Cory Malet and his son Nicholas inherited not
; only his mother's
property but also that of her sister Mabel, wife of Hugh de Vivonia. He also
held the manor of Tokington as well as Swell, and the manor of Sutton
in capite of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester. He married Elizabeth,
daughter of Timothy Dyall, by whom he had one son, Hugh Poyntz.
He did homage for the barony he held of the King (znd Edward and
I.),
was summoned to a muster at Worcester, 1277, to punish Llewelyn Prince
of Wales, by invading his country. Again, in 1282, the Welsh having
broken into rebellion, and murdered Lord Clifford, the King's justiciar in
Wales, Hugh Poyntz was summoned to Rhuddlan Castle, and was probably
at the great battle fought in December, 1282, in which the English were
completely victorious, Prince Llewelyn slain by a common soldier, and two
thousand of his men destroyed. In the following year he was also serving
with the King when Prince Edward (Llewelyn's brother), who had escaped,
was captured and cruelly put to death. And the following year we find
him attending the Parliament summoned at Shrewsbury.
In 1294 he was with another army, collected to march into Wales, at
Worcester, and was summoned to Parliament as a baron, 1295. He was also
with the King at the battle of Dunbar, 1296, when the Scots were defeated
with great slaughter, which led to the formal surrender by
Baliol of the
And finally we find his name on the Caerlaverock roll, when
regal dignity.
in 1300 Edward determined to invade Scotland again, and assembled his
army at Carlisle to attack that famous castle. He also was amongst the
barons who signed or rather sealed the letter to Pope Boniface, though
the actual seal used seems to have been that of his son, " S. Nicholai
" Poyntz ;" and his name appears amongst the barons summoned to
Parliament, as late as ist Edward II., 1307, when he died. He married
Margaret, daughter of Sir William Pavelly, and left one son, Nicholas, who
married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Edward de la Zouche. His grandson
Nicholas left two daughters Amicia, wife of John Barry, who had no issue,
and Margaret, wife of Sir John de Newburgh, of Lulworth. But Nicholas
was never summoned to Parliament. He is known to have dissipated his
patrimony, and it is possible that having thereby alienated his tenure
without the King's license, the barony by tenure lapsed to the Crown.
