PERFORMANCE, ACHIEVEMENTS AND OUTCOMES<br />
Successful completion of the traineeship results<br />
inthe issuance of Certificate III in Correctional<br />
Practice and may also result in an offer of ongoing<br />
employment.<br />
During the <strong>2015</strong>-<strong>16</strong> year, 52 (34 from Alice<br />
Springs and 18 from Darwin) TCOs successfully<br />
completed their Certificate III in Correctional<br />
Practice and were offered permanent<br />
employment as Correctional Officers.<br />
Correctional Officer promotional courses<br />
In accordance with the Correctional Officer<br />
2014-2017 Enterprise Agreement, Correctional<br />
Officers must undertake certain training and<br />
qualifications to progress in their career through<br />
the ranks. Those who meet the required criteria<br />
are eligible to apply and commence their study for<br />
the Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.<br />
In 20<strong>16</strong>, the number of units required to complete<br />
the qualification was changed from 18 units to 12<br />
units under the national standards.<br />

On completion of the one week<br />
course, Officers are awarded the<br />
rank of Correctional Officer First<br />
Class and can then conduct higher<br />
duties roles as a Senior Correctional<br />
Officer within the workplace,<br />
enabling them to complete the<br />
remaining units of competence<br />
On successful completion of the<br />
remaining units the officer achieves<br />
a further salary increment.<br />
During <strong>2015</strong>-<strong>16</strong>, three separate Senior<br />
Correctional Promotional Courses were<br />
delivered. There were 29 new enrolments in<br />
the Certificate IV Correctional Practice and 13<br />
students who completed the qualification.<br />
Correctional Officer Core Skills Training<br />
Essential core skills for Correctional Officers are<br />
maintained through a structured approach to<br />
on-going training. Core training is conducted<br />
each week with Correctional Officers from both<br />
correctional centres being taken off the roster to<br />
participate in training and requalification in the<br />
areas of Defensive Tactics, First Aid, Advanced<br />
Resuscitation, Chemical Agents and various<br />
other disciplines as required.<br />
Youth Justice Officer Training<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>, a new training program was introduced<br />
for all new Youth Justice Officer (YJO) trainees.<br />
All newly recruited YJOs undertake a 12 month<br />
traineeship within NTDCS which consists of<br />
three separate stages:<br />
Stage 1:<br />

Stage 3:<br />
Seven weeks of classroom theory<br />
and practical activities<br />
One week of work experience<br />
within the youth detention centre<br />
Remainder of the 12 month<br />
contract is the on the job<br />
component of the training.<br />

in the issuance of Certificate III in Correctional<br />
Practice and may also result in an offer of<br />
ongoing employment.<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>-<strong>16</strong>, 23 YJOs trainees in Darwin and<br />
seven in Alice Springs completed the first<br />
and second stages. A further <strong>16</strong> YJOs have<br />
completed stage one and are commencing stage<br />
two.<br />
