PERFORMANCE, ACHIEVEMENTS AND OUTCOMES<br />
Northern Cup (basketball)<br />
The 20<strong>16</strong> Northern Cup was run by the<br />
Department of Sport and Recreation in the<br />
township of Batchelor. The Northern Cup is<br />
the end product of a series of coaching clinics<br />
conducted in remote regions, focussing on<br />
participation, teamwork and leadership. The<br />
clinics culminating in a two day round robin<br />
tournament and DDYDC detainees were invited<br />
to participate.<br />
Youth Detainee garden program in Alice Springs<br />
Commencing in September <strong>2015</strong>, detainees<br />
ranging in groups of 6 to 12, are growing<br />
assorted vegetables on site. These vegetables<br />
are then used as part of the cooking programs<br />
conducted by Education. Each Thursday the<br />
detainees prepare the lunch and evening meals,<br />
learning daily life skills, which may assist them<br />
with their court matters, and on release from the<br />
detention centre.<br />
NTDCS entered a team from DDYDC named<br />
the ‘Tivendale School’ which comprised<br />
seven detainees and Victor Williams, General<br />
Manager of DDYDC. Youth Justice Officer Bayi<br />
Handy was the coach and Errol Wilson Senior<br />
Correctional Officer the team manager.<br />
Tivendale School played nine games all up,<br />
losing to the Timber Creek Eagles in the<br />
grand final. Victor Williams was very positive<br />
in his assessment of the detainees, stating<br />
that, “The young men conducted themselves<br />
like gentlemen during the tournament and<br />
their sportsmanship was exceptional.” The<br />
tournament organisers and members from the<br />
public also made comment on how polite and<br />
well-mannered the young men from DDYDC<br />
were, and that we were welcome to participate<br />
in other sporting events.<br />

Student of the week award, in conjunction with<br />
Education<br />
All young people in Youth Detention are<br />
required to attend school but ASYDC has come<br />
up with a new initiative to encourage learning<br />
and strive for results. Every week a student<br />
is selected as ‘Student of the Week’. This has<br />
proven to be a good incentive for Alice Springs<br />
detainees. At the end of the school week a<br />
student is issued with a certificate, which can be<br />
produced in court. Custodial staff also rewards<br />
the detainee with a drink and a packet of chips.<br />

Basketball Court for ASYDC<br />
In June 20<strong>16</strong>, ASCC Correctional Industries in<br />
consultation with the ASYDC built a basketball<br />
court at the Detention Centre site to be used by<br />
the youth detainees.<br />
The new basketball area provides a user friendly<br />
and safe environment for the detainees to<br />
engage in sporting activities. The basketball<br />
court was built using prisoners from the Cottages<br />
at ASCC to provide the labour under supervision<br />
of Correctional Industries officers who also<br />
assisted.<br />
The detainees are able to participate in activities<br />
which promote a healthy lifestyle and as well as<br />
engage in team sport.<br />
