Reimagining Airports
Documentary on klia2 screened in conjunction
with Malaysia Day celebrations
Malaysia Airports celebrated the nation's 53rd Malaysia Day
by showing its contribution to nation building via a sneak
preview of Reimagining Airports – a documentary on the
making of klia2.
The preview was held at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC)
Alamanda Putrajaya on September 15 and attended by
Malaysia Airports' Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Sri Dr Wan Abdul
Aziz Wan Abdullah and Managing Director, Datuk Badlisham
Ghazali.
In his opening remarks, Badlisham said, since its opening on
2 May 2014, klia2 has been regarded as one of the nation's
iconic landmarks and the almost two-hour long documentary
was a celebration of that.
"In its two years of operations, klia2 has already experienced
steady growth – its passenger traffic numbers for 2015, at 26
million, was 9% more than that of 2014."
He also said
klia2, which
was built for
a capacity
of 45 million
passengers
per annum,
recorded 12%
more growth in the first half of this year when compared to
the same period last year.
He said klia2 has also stimulated its own economic growth.
"For its construction, a total of 61 packages had been awarded
to 114 companies to fulfil this aim. The abundance of retail
space in klia2 has also provided business and job opportunities
to more than 100,000 people. On top of that, 36% of the
retail space in klia2 is occupied by Bumiputera entrepreneurs
– higher than any downtown shopping malls. By the end of
2016, this number would reach 40%."
Badlisham added that the terminal was already larger than
some major airports around the world and is expected to bring
30 million passenger traffic numbers in 2025 and will function
at its full passenger traffic capacity by 2035.
The documentary featured the team and crew members
responsible in building the RM4 billion terminal with then
Malaysia Airports Managing Director, Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad,
spearheading the group.
Viewers were enlightened on several key features regarding
klia2 which included the terminal having the tallest control
tower in the world, being one of three airports in the world
to have a sky bridge which allows passengers a stunning view
of the airside, possessing three runways and finally being the
largest low cost carrier terminal in the world.
