ROBBEN ISLAND
Robben Island is a must visit while in
Cape Town as it is infamously known as
being the prison where Nelson Mandela
spent 27 years behind bars. Tours of the
prison are done by ex-prisoners and you
get to visit the actual prison cells where
convicts stayed. The most interesting
part of the tour is having a glimpse of
Mandela’s life in a tiny cell.
LONG STREET
Party goers should keep a lookout for
this street while party poopers should
stay away. Long Street is known for its
hostels, restaurants and bars. The area
stays loud until about 4am every
morning, so it’s a great place if you want
to party but if you’d prefer a good night
sleep – find a quieter area! The street
is also popular during the day, with loads
of cafes, restaurants and shops.
SHARK CAGE DIVING
Remember, these creatures are wild and
are not trained for human entertainment,
so it will be very much a waiting game.
However, it is worth waiting for as South
Africa is one of the handful of countries
that allows you to go cage diving with
great white sharks.
No experience is needed as you only
wear a mask and no snorkel or diving
gear is given. When sharks are near the
boat, the cage is lowered into water with
you in it! When the time is right, the staff
will let you know that you will need to
hold your breath and go underwater for
as long as you can to watch the sharks
swim by.
LION’S HEAD
Travel
Lion’s Head is a smaller mountain
located next to Cape Town. It is next to
Table Mountain and is very popular with
hikers. Lion’s Head is part of Table
Mountain National Park that stands at
670 metres high with a relatively flat
track. The exciting part of the trek is at
the leg of the summit, where you need
the aid of chains and ladders to ascend.
KIRSTENBOSCH
BOTANICAL GARDENS
This botanical gardens is located at the
bottom of Table Mountain and has been
described as ‘the most beautiful garden
in South Africa’.
