Academic writing requires more formal written English. Usually,<br />
contractions are seldom used, and informal vocabulary is avoided. Do the<br />
exercises below to review some vocabulary differences between informal<br />
spoken English and more formal written English.<br />

In each sentence, circle the underlined word or phrase that is more<br />
appropriate for academic writing. After you finish, compare answers<br />
with two classmates'.<br />

2. The Ferrari ad is way cool / very striking.<br />
3. Marketers should not crowd their ads with too much written<br />

4. Some ads are very eye-catching, but they advertise useless<br />

5. It is OK / acceptable to use attractive people in ads as long as they<br />
