Effective Communication Speech and Drama Programme The Secondary 1 students went through a 10-week Speech and Drama Programme in Term 2 where they learnt the basic elements of Speech and Drama. During the course of the programme, students tapped on their creativity to craft and flesh out scripts in teacher-led lessons, and learnt stage directions and masterful use of voice with Act 3 to produce an entertaining skit. The programme ended with a big bang with the students staging their skits excitedly during the ALP Showcase session. Journalism and Broadcast Programme A total of about 281 students participated enthusiastically in the 8 sessions of Journalism and Broadcast programme. With the objective to develop students to be confident communicators, especially in the context of Journalism and Broadcast, the training sessions were truly proof of what teamwork, effort and training can do to help students to become confident presenters. Experiential learning via a series of Learnings Journeys to related organsiations helped to further stimulate and spur the students in their learning. The programme was definitely welcomed by the students as they found many exciting moments to collaborate with one another in completing their group projects. The group presentations best captured their journey of discovery of feature writing, news reporting and even radio deejay broadcasting. Discipline The Discipline Committee strives to inculcate responsible behaviour amongst all Mayflowerians with the belief that purpose precedes practice. Hence, we aim to develop our students into individuals with self-discipline who will take responsibility for their actions. In light of this philosophy, the rules and regulations of the school are designed to promote the five school values. Discipline in Mayflower is not about blind obedience. It is about ownership, right thinking and responsible behaviour. Our role as teachers here is not custodial, but developmental, where every staff member is a disciplinarian and educator of values. With this mindset, we hope to see “discipline as a bridge between goals and accomplishments” – Jim Rohm When students break the rules, we want them to understand that they are to take ownership of their actions and take the opportunity learn how to address the problems and correct their behaviour. By focusing on the problem and not the students, we uphold the dignity of both the students and the affected parties, thus allowing restoration through restitution. The DC also initiated ‘Catching Mayflowerians Doing Good’. There are many good deeds and behaviour by our students that often go unacknowledged. Hence, teachers are given ‘Good Conduct’ cards so that whenever they witness good or improved behaviour, they may commend the students for their positive actions. This is done in the hope of encouraging more of such behaviour. This has garnered positive feedback and we hope we can ‘catch’ more Mayflowerians doing good! This year, the discipline team has also reviewed and streamlined the processes for the use of handphones in school. In line with our philosophy, we hope to cultivate responsible usage of handphones in students. In addition, the discipline team will be reviewing the rules and consequences later in the year. We will also be conducting focus group sessions with the students and the staff as a gesture of inclusivity and to gather their input on how the school may further improve the discipline climate so as to facilitate effective teaching and learning values.
