Malay Dance
Mayflower Malay Dance aims to be a community of
passionate, disciplined and causal dancers who are
intrepid in exploring their talent of dance and inspiring
others through their performances.
2017 has certainly been an eventful year for our
CCA, having participated in the school’s Open House,
CCA Exhibition for Sec 1s, CNY Celebrations, and the
Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. In
addition, our dancers added a new to their cap - makeup
workshop conducted by CosmoProf Academy. Our
dancers also got to see a showcase of the evolution
and history of Malay music in Singapore through their
aesthetic outing to watch Nuri Terbang Malam.
In Semester 2, our dancers performed in the Singapore
Heart Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at the
Singapore Island Country Club in front of the Guestof-Honour
ESM Mr Goh Chok Tong. For our Sports
education Programme, we tried something new –
Dragon Boating! An activity not usually associated with
dancers.
Our main item of 2017, of course, was the SYF Arts
Presentation. We began preparations and training for
our dance choreography almost a year ago. Our entry,
entitled “Semarak Warisan” was a celebration of the
Malay culture’s youth and evergreen quality through
the generations. Our dancers had the experience
of using traditional props such as the tepak sirih
and the gunungan, to augment their vibrant and
fast-paced choreography. Through rigorous training
and preparation as well as careful guidance from
our instructor, our Malay Dancers put up a stellar
performance on the day of their presentation, taking
home a Certificate of Accomplishment for the second
time.
Our CCA President Muhammad Aiman had this to
say: “I initially joined Malay dance because I saw their
performances and it made me interested to learn
more about it. After joining, it helped me to gain more
knowledge about the Malay culture, values and the
different types of dances. It has really made a huge
impact in my life.”
