He was just 23 years old. This began<br />
his observations of people in the region<br />
and his attraction to their culture. In the<br />
next three years, which coincided with<br />
the reign of His Majesty King Mongkut<br />
(King Rama IV), Thomson decided to sell<br />
his studio in Singapore and take a passenger<br />
steamer to Bangkok. As soon as<br />
he reached the capital city, Thomson<br />
requested royal permission from His Majesty<br />
King Mongkut to continue his photography,<br />
and was granted an audience.<br />
He became the first photographer to have<br />
access to the Royal Court, and captured<br />
ceremonies and traditions that were uncommon<br />
for even people of that era, such<br />
as images of young Prince Chulalongkorn<br />
(son of His Majesty King Mongkut and<br />
soon to be King Rama V), the intricate<br />
royal ceremonial offerings made by the<br />
court, or rare funeral images of the King’s<br />
brother, Prince Chutamani (who was titled<br />
‘Second King’ and known as King Pinklao.)<br />
These images became invaluable at chronicling<br />
a bygone era, and most importantly<br />
are now evidence that academics still<br />
use today as references for their studies<br />
of history and cultural arts.<br />
