BUSINESS SERVICES<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is a major hub <strong>for</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess services on the <strong>Africa</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ent. Its highly diverse bus<strong>in</strong>ess services<br />

sector is one of the largest <strong>in</strong> the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n economy, account<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> 13.2% of GDP <strong>in</strong> 2018.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> major segments of the bus<strong>in</strong>ess services sector <strong>in</strong>clude professional services such as legal, account<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and architectural services; real estate activities; rent<strong>in</strong>g of mach<strong>in</strong>ery, equipment, personal and<br />

household goods; bus<strong>in</strong>ess process outsourc<strong>in</strong>g; computer and <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation technology services; advertis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

services; and, among others, bus<strong>in</strong>ess consult<strong>in</strong>g services.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> sector’s growth has benefited from the structural trend towards the outsourc<strong>in</strong>g of non-core activities by<br />

domestic companies.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess services sector is expected to susta<strong>in</strong> robust rates of growth <strong>in</strong> the years ahead. This will be<br />

anchored by:<br />

- Progressively higher rates of economic growth, particularly fixed <strong>in</strong>vestment activity;<br />

- <strong>The</strong> large public sector <strong>in</strong>frastructure development programme currently under way;<br />

- <strong>The</strong> proliferation of new-generation technologies across all sectors of the economy; and, among others,<br />

- Grow<strong>in</strong>g demand <strong>in</strong> external markets, particularly <strong>in</strong> other <strong>Africa</strong>n countries.<br />

WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE SERVICES<br />

• <strong>The</strong> wholesale and retail trade sector contributed 14.2% to <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s GDP <strong>in</strong> 2018 and is a major<br />

contributor to overall employment.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> sector offers attractive <strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities, anchored <strong>in</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g customer spend that is supported by<br />

an expand<strong>in</strong>g population with <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g purchas<strong>in</strong>g power, a fast-grow<strong>in</strong>g middle class, and the high <strong>in</strong>flow of<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess and shopp<strong>in</strong>g tourists, particularly from numerous other <strong>Africa</strong>n countries.<br />

• Some of the world’s largest corporations <strong>in</strong> the wholesale and retail services arena have recognised these<br />

opportunities, thus <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>in</strong> recent years (e.g. Walmart, H&M, Zara, Mango).<br />

• Progressive consolidation <strong>in</strong> the sector has meant that a smaller number of companies are ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

market share <strong>in</strong> their respective market segments. Many of the bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>in</strong> the sector are <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong> their<br />

supply cha<strong>in</strong>s and have well-established foundations <strong>for</strong> further expansion and <strong>in</strong>vestment to leverage on the<br />

emerg<strong>in</strong>g opportunities.<br />

• Several of <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s major wholesale and retail corporates have, over the years, developed strong<br />

footpr<strong>in</strong>ts across the <strong>Africa</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ent. <strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>clude warehous<strong>in</strong>g, distribution and retail<strong>in</strong>g operations<br />

sourc<strong>in</strong>g goods and services not only <strong>in</strong> the host countries but also from the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n economy.
