OCEANS ECONOMY<br />
• Several factors support <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s<br />
relative competitive advantage <strong>for</strong> the<br />
development and growth of maritimerelated<br />
services <strong>in</strong>dustries. Importantly,<br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is the strategic <strong>Africa</strong>n hub<br />
<strong>for</strong> maritime operations <strong>in</strong> the <strong>South</strong>-<br />
<strong>South</strong> trade corridor from Asia to the<br />
eastern coast of <strong>South</strong> America and<br />
connector routes along the eastern and<br />
western coasts of <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s proximity to offshore and<br />
exploration sites around <strong>Africa</strong>, supported<br />
by sophisticated technology, skills and<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure, makes the country a<br />
compell<strong>in</strong>g site <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> maritime<br />
services.<br />
SELECT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE<br />
OCEANS ECONOMY:<br />
• Repair and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of ships and drill<strong>in</strong>g rigs,<br />
supported by extensive <strong>in</strong>frastructure and deep supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
• Investment <strong>in</strong> next-generation ship- and boat-build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technology services.<br />
• Bunker<strong>in</strong>g, re-supply and medical support services.<br />
• Provision of storage and logistics services.<br />
• Port operations consult<strong>in</strong>g services.<br />
• Provision of maritime tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g services.<br />
• Opportunities <strong>for</strong> private equity <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> local and<br />
pan-<strong>Africa</strong>n project development.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> country has eight major ports,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g two of the world’s top conta<strong>in</strong>er<br />
ports and two of the world’s biggest dry<br />
bulk ports, with capacity <strong>for</strong> Panamex,<br />
Capesize vessels and ultra-large conta<strong>in</strong>er<br />
ships. Durban port and Saldanha Bay<br />
also have the capacity <strong>for</strong> offload<strong>in</strong>g large<br />
crude carriers.<br />
• A major opportunity perta<strong>in</strong>s to ship/<br />
oil rig repair and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance services<br />
provided to ocean vessels travell<strong>in</strong>g along<br />
one of the world’s busiest shipp<strong>in</strong>g routes.<br />
Underp<strong>in</strong>ned by significant skills locally,<br />
there are unique opportunities to service<br />
(ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and repair) mar<strong>in</strong>e oil rigs along<br />
the west coast of <strong>Africa</strong>, as well as new<br />
natural resource extraction projects (e.g.<br />
gas <strong>in</strong> Mozambique).<br />
• <strong>The</strong> government’s strategic support<br />
programme, precipitated by the Operation<br />
Phakisa <strong>for</strong> the Oceans Economy, has<br />
set a target to grow its GDP contribution<br />
to ZAR177-billion by 2033, equivalent<br />
to 350% growth of its total value-add<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2016, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Department<br />
of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries.<br />
This will unlock significant <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />
opportunities.
