ELECTRICAL MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY<br />

• <strong>The</strong> electrical mach<strong>in</strong>ery sub-sector contributed 1.5% to <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s total manufactur<strong>in</strong>g GDP <strong>in</strong> 2018. It is<br />

segmented <strong>in</strong>to the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g of equipment and components <strong>for</strong> electricity distribution, which accounts<br />

<strong>for</strong> the bulk of activity <strong>in</strong> the sector; components <strong>for</strong> the automotive sector; and the production of light<strong>in</strong>g<br />

equipment.<br />

• Its key products <strong>in</strong>clude wires; electrical motors; generators; trans<strong>for</strong>mers; distribution equipment; components<br />

<strong>for</strong> the automotive sector (e.g. harnesses, ignition wire sets); light<strong>in</strong>g equipment and electrical <strong>in</strong>sulators,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g light bulbs, fitt<strong>in</strong>gs and illum<strong>in</strong>ated signs.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> sub-sector is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by two players, namely the Altron Group and the Actom Group, which are<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrated across entire supply cha<strong>in</strong>s through various operat<strong>in</strong>g entities.<br />

parts <strong>for</strong> electric motors and generators; lamps and light fitt<strong>in</strong>gs; and, among others, electrical switches and<br />

connectors.
