EMERGING GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN<br />

SUSTAINABLE MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA<br />

• Challenges associated with ris<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g depths and decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>eral ore yields have created opportunities <strong>for</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>filtration of next-generation digital technology applications <strong>in</strong>to the local m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sector.<br />

• This trend has led to the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g deployment of large data analytics and digitisation to counteract susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

challenges, particularly <strong>in</strong> the deep-level and labour-<strong>in</strong>tensive gold and plat<strong>in</strong>um m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sub-sectors.<br />

• Urgency to improve the global competitiveness of local m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations has placed <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> at the <strong>for</strong>efront<br />

of technological developments <strong>in</strong> deep-level cont<strong>in</strong>uous and mechanised m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This has attracted capital<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment from various large global hard-rock capital equipment manufacturers such as Caterpillar and Komatsu.<br />

• Increased focus on m<strong>in</strong>e health and safety has led to growth <strong>in</strong> the deployment of new-generation Proximity<br />

Detection Systems (PDS), led locally by Booyco Electronics. <strong>The</strong>se systems aid <strong>in</strong> the detection of pedestrians, as<br />

well as <strong>in</strong> the risk management of collisions, support<strong>in</strong>g the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry’s goal towards zero harm <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

• Notable commercial new-generation m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude De Beers’s Venetia Underground<br />

Project <strong>in</strong> Limpopo prov<strong>in</strong>ce, Ivanhoe’s Platreef Project <strong>in</strong> Mokopane, Vedanta Z<strong>in</strong>c International's Gamsberg<br />

Project, as well as the Waterberg Plat<strong>in</strong>um Group Metals Project north of Mokopane.<br />

• In general, m<strong>in</strong>e digitisation and systems development have unlocked numerous <strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities <strong>for</strong> the<br />

development of next-generation m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g equipment clusters locally. This will drive the exploitation of the country’s<br />

vast, untapped m<strong>in</strong>eral resources and, by potentially <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g life of m<strong>in</strong>e, also extend the socio-economic<br />

contribution of m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g-related activities.<br />

DIGITAL MINING TECHNOLOGY<br />

Digital technology is advanc<strong>in</strong>g rapidly <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Artificial <strong>in</strong>telligence applications are help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the development of driverless m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g equipment to access<br />

hazardous m<strong>in</strong>eral deposits.<br />

• Technology applications are provid<strong>in</strong>g real-time feedback on equipment utilisation rates.<br />

• Drone technology is replac<strong>in</strong>g traditional survey<strong>in</strong>g methods and assist<strong>in</strong>g to provide more detailed <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation<br />

on resource geology, allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> efficient resource development and management.<br />

• Data analytics are f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g use <strong>for</strong> the analysis and optimisation of m<strong>in</strong>e operational statistics.
