CHEMICALS AND CHEMICAL PRODUCTS INDUSTRIES:<br />
ESTABLISHED PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN VARIOUS CHEMICAL<br />
PRODUCT SEGMENTS<br />
• <strong>The</strong> chemical products sub-sector, which contributes 5.7% to total manufactur<strong>in</strong>g GDP, has <strong>in</strong>stalled capacity <strong>in</strong><br />
a wide range of products.<br />
• Its ma<strong>in</strong> segments <strong>in</strong>clude pesticides and other agro-chemical products; pharmaceuticals; pa<strong>in</strong>ts, coat<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
varnishes and pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ks; soaps, detergents, clean<strong>in</strong>g preparations, toilet preparations and perfumes; and<br />
other chemical products, dom<strong>in</strong>ated by the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g of explosives.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> production of pesticides, which is characterised by relatively high barriers to entry, is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by BASF<br />
SA, Syngenta SA, DOW Agrosciences <strong>South</strong>ern <strong>Africa</strong>, Plaaskem and Monsanto <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s pharmaceuticals value cha<strong>in</strong> is well established and mature, with local production capacity<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g close to 70% of domestic demand.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> bulk of local pharmaceuticals manufactur<strong>in</strong>g capacity comprises generic medic<strong>in</strong>es, represent<strong>in</strong>g 50% of the<br />
overall pharmaceuticals market. Local companies Aspen and Adcock Ingram are major players <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
