CLOTHING, TEXTILES, FOOTWEAR AND LEATHER INDUSTRIES:<br />
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES<br />
• Substantial opportunities exist <strong>for</strong> import replacement and export development on the back of highly<br />
preferential access to <strong>for</strong>eign markets, particularly the US (duty-free access under AGOA), the European Union<br />
(SADC-EU EPA), and other member states of SADC.<br />
• Not only does the <strong>Africa</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ent present a market of around 1.3-billion consumers <strong>for</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n textiles and<br />
garments, but these products are also becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly popular <strong>in</strong> European and Eastern markets.<br />
Cloth<strong>in</strong>g brands from <strong>Africa</strong>n designers are also mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>roads <strong>in</strong> global markets. Significant opportunities<br />
exist <strong>for</strong> designers to adapt traditional <strong>Africa</strong>n textiles <strong>for</strong> uses <strong>in</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g, household textiles and so on.<br />
• L<strong>in</strong>kages with the automotive value cha<strong>in</strong> have susta<strong>in</strong>ed demand <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial textiles, particularly leather<br />
products <strong>for</strong> export-oriented leather seat cover manufactur<strong>in</strong>g.
